(VientianeTimes) Construction of the first hydropower plant in the lower Mekong basin will comply with the MRC Secretariat Preliminary Design Guidance and best practices based on international standards, according to an official Lao statement.

The statement was delivered by Mr Viraphonh Viravong in defence of the development of a proposed hydro-electricity power plant on the Mekong River.

(Vientiane Times) The Mekong River Commission (MRC) Secretariat announced yesterday that the joint committee of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam will host a special meeting to discuss construction of the first hydropower plant in the lower Mekong River.

The committee is meeting in Vientiane today to comment on construction of the 280 metre high hydropower dam on a section of the Mekong in Huaysoui village of Xayaboury province and Pakneun village of Luang Prabang province.

(VientianeTimes) The environmental importance of wetlands was highlighted in the Water Resource and Environment Administration's (WREA) Scientific Seminar on Friday at the International Cooperation and Training Centre Vientiane.

The seminar was part of Vientiane's celebrations for this year's World Water Day on March 22.

During the seminar, experts highlighted the abundant natural resources of the country and the benefits of wetlands to economic development.

(VientianeTimes) Laos joins the international community to celebrate the 61th anniversary of World Meteorological Day on March 23.

This year's theme, “Climate for you”, focused on establishing meteorological networking stations to improve weather forecasts.

Deputy Prime Minister and President of National Environment Committee Asang Laoly released his message to mark the event, saying that changes in climatic conditions around the globe are causing both positive and negative effects on the livelihoods of people.

(KPL) Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong on Monday delivered a message to mark World Water Day 2011.

The slogan of this years event on March 22 is Water for Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge.

According to Mr Thongsing, half of the worlds population now live and work in urban areas.

Rapid population growth and migration to urban centres for employment and economic opportunities has seen big cities around the world swell in size in recent times.
