(Vientiane Times) The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment needs US$430 million to fund programmes over the next five years that aim to manage natural resources and the environment in regards to socio-economic development.

Representatives from various government agencies and international organisations yesterday gathered in Vientiane to discuss a five-year plan for the development of the natural resource and environment sector.

(VientianeTimes) The Meteorology and Hydrology Department warned people living below part of the Nam Ngum I Hydropower Plant to move their possessions and livestock to higher ground as the plant released more water on Saturday.

The heavy rain in central parts of Laos last week caused the plant's water level to reach a dangerous height.

The danger level is 212.30m but the water level of the river that feeds the power plant reached 213.31m yesterday.

Tropical storm Nock-Ten brings more flooding PDF Print E-mail

(VientianeTimes) Flooding occurred in many northern and central provinces, including 45 villages in six districts of Khammuan province, after tropical storm Nock-Ten hit Laos over the weekend, but exact details on the extent of damage is yet to be reported.

Heavy rainfall on Saturday and Sunday caused river levels to rise, inundating low lying areas of the country, but no reports of deaths or injuries have been recorded so far. Khammuan province began to feel the effects of Nock-Ten on Saturday morning. By Sunday many villages were flooded, especially in Hinboun district were 25 villages and 15 schools are still flooded, according to a provincial disaster management official, Mr Bounsieng Xaphakdee.

(VientianeTimes) Mr Noulinh Sinbandhit is now the man in charge of managing the country's natural resources after officially becoming head of the newly created Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on Friday.

This ministry was created by merging the National Land Management Authority (NLMA) with the Water Resource and Environment Administration (WREA) and several portfolios from other ministries including geology and forestry management and protection.

(VientianeTimes) Ministries are holding ceremonies for cabinet members to take up their new positions after they were approved by the National Assembly last month.

On Friday, Mr Noulinh Sinbandhit took up the position of Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, replacing Ms Khempheng Pholsena who now becomes Minister to the Government Office.

Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong and other high-ranking officials from line ministries and government sectors were present at the event.
